There will be no new Substack articles over Christmas and the New Year holiday period.
2025 sees the 150th anniversary of the death of Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson on 22nd March, 1875. To commemorate it, The Alexander Thomson Society is organising a two-month exhibition at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, currently planned to run from 15th March to close just after the Easter weekend. The exhibition will include previously unpublished images of lost Thomson buildings, plans from the Mitchell Library’s collection, books and artefacts, and be accompanied by talks and a showing of Murray Grigor’s film Nineveh on the Clyde.
The exhibition forms part of the Mitchell Library’s contribution to Glasgow 850, celebrating the 850th anniversary of Glasgow’s charter from King William the Lion. In partnership with The Alexander Thomson Society, the Library is hosting a programme of weekly talks and films throughout the year, bringing on Saturday, 11th January. While there will be a strong emphasis on Glasgow’s built environment, the programme is also intended to include discussions about the city’s future in a post-Covid, post-Amazon world.
All events are free and take place at 1.00pm in the ground floor Moir-Dyer Room. Where possible, it is planned to enable online participants via Zoom, and possibly to record talks for online broadcasting. Events will be included on the Society’s website and on Eventbrite and GlasgowLive’s WhatsOn pages as they are confirmed. To book tickets, go here.
Congratulations, Dominic, on all your efforts for 2025!
